Typical 17th Century Yeoman Farmhouse In Northern Fells, Lake District (left) A typical 17th century yeoman farmhouse situated in the Northern Fells of the Lake District. This building is characteristic of the local house plan of the region. Note the small fire window which was situated alongside the inglenook fireplace. Originally this window would have provided the only natural light for the room.

HOUSE HISTORY COURSES

Chris has run several "House Detective" courses designed to assist and encourage the eager amateur to investigate the history of an old property. The courses have been run under the umbrella of the local education authority and include a specially arranged visit to the local archives, where a senior county archivist instructs course members on how to use the documents available to best effect. Many course members have gone on to discover exciting and revealing details about their house and its former inhabitants

HOUSE HISTORY STUDY DAYS AND SEMINARS

Recently Chris ran a very successful house history day for the Lorton and Derwent Fells History Society's House History Group, at the ancient yeoman farmhouse known as Highhouses. This wonderful building situated on the fells and overlooking the Solway Firth dates from at least the late 17th century and is alive with traditional features running through several different time scales and alterations. Participants, who became house detectives themselves for the day, were able to view the house thrugh the eyes of a former inhabitant, William Williamson, by using his Will, dated 1671, which described many of the rooms and features in the house at that time. Also on display were diagrams, maps and other documents relating to the history of the house.

The host for the day was the owner of the property and caterer, Jill Green, who put on a lovely simple lunch as well as morning refreshments and afternoon tea with delicious cakes and scones. The day was declared very successful and enjoyable by all concerned and it is planned to repeat it in the near future for other history societies and groups.

LOCAL AND FAMILY HISTORY COURSES

Chris has run several family history courses at local adult education centres and it is hoped in the future to run local study days and workshops in both family and local history.

TALKS

Chris is available to give talks to groups and societies. Please email for more details.
